Hi, everyone!
Today, I'm excited to share with you a step-by-step guide on how to export your illustrations from Adobe Illustrator in both EPS and AI formats. I'll also provide some valuable tips on saving vector files specifically for microstocks and marketplaces aimed at artists.
Let's start by quickly defining what EPS and AI formats are and why they matter in the realm of graphic design.
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a versatile file format used for vector images. It preserves various graphic elements that can be created in Adobe Illustrator and can be reopened and edited like Illustrator files. One of the key features of EPS files is their compatibility with almost all graphic applications, layout programs, and text editors. Since EPS is based on the PostScript language, it can contain both vector and raster images. If you're working with multiple artboards, don't worry—saving in EPS format will keep those artboards intact.
AI (Adobe Illustrator) files are the native file format of Adobe Illustrator. They are ideal for storing vector graphics and retaining layers and effects applied within Illustrator. However, it's worth noting that AI files are primarily for use within Adobe's ecosystem.
Follow these steps to save your illustration in EPS format:
1. Go to File > Save As.
2. Input your desired file name and choose a suitable folder to save your file.
3. From the file type dropdown, select "Illustrator EPS (*.EPS)" and then click Save.
4. If you have multiple artboards and want to create separate files for each, check the "Use Artboards" option. You can then choose either "All" or "Range" to specify the artboards you're saving. Note that for microstocks, it's advisable not to check this box so that you have a single EPS file.
5. In the EPS Options dialog box, set the parameters as desired and hit OK.
- Choose Version "Illustrator 10 EPS" to ensure compatibility across devices for your clients.
- Set Preview format to "TIFF (8-bit color)" for optimal viewing.
- Uncheck Embedded Fonts if your illustration stands alone without text elements.
Next, here’s how to save your illustration in AI format:
1. Go to File > Save As.
2. Enter your preferred file name and select your saving folder.
3. In the file type dropdown, choose "Adobe Illustrator (*.AI)" (For microstocks, do not check the box); then click Save.
4. In the Options dialog box, adjust the settings according to your needs and click OK.
For Microstocks: Select Version "Illustrator CS" to ensure compatibility with most platforms.
Wrapping Up
I hope this post helps you streamline your workflow when saving illustrations in EPS and AI formats! Properly saving your files is crucial for ensuring your artwork is showcased correctly on microstocks and other marketplaces.
